Small Bites of Accommodation Advice - Moving Out
Moving out of your rental accommodation
When you are moving / planning to move out of your current rental property, take note of the following:
- The end of a rental agreement usually falls under one of the following:
- Normally, at the end of a contract period or during a periodic agreement after enough notice (time) has been given.
- The tenant and the landlord/agent agree in writing.
- Other circumstances
- Notice periods
- You (or your landlord/agent) have to give enough notice (time) before a tenancy can be ended.
- IMPORTANT: This is true even if you have a contract. You will need to let your landlord/agent know whether you intend to stay or continue staying at the property before you contract ends.
- All notices to leave MUST be done in writing and SIGNED.
- Notice period lengths can be found on the RTA website.
- Exit condition reports
- When you leave, you’ll need to fill in an Exit condition Report (similar to the Entry condition report you filled in at the start of your tenancy) to record the condition of the property when you move out.
- You will need to return the property to the landlord/agent in the same condition (minus fair wear and tear from daily use).
- This is important for you to get your bond back.
- Getting your rental bond back
- MAKE SURE that the RTA has your current contact details via phone/email.
- Call the RTA and update them with your forwarding address, email and contact number. If you prefer email, let them know that it is your preferred means of communication.
- You can apply to get your bond refunded by applying to the RTA.
- This is usually done by your landlord/agent when you are moving out BUT do not assume that this is automatically done.
- Your landlord/agent can also make a claim for some (or all) of your bond.
- The RTA will contact you if there is a claim (from your landlord/agent) on your bond money and you can either agree or disagree with the claim when contacted.
- MAKE SURE that the RTA has your current contact details via phone/email.
