Small Bites of Accommodation Advice - Early Lease Break
What to do if you want to end your lease early / break lease.
(Emergency situations only)
If a fixed-term contract is signed between you and your landlord/property agent, you’ll usually need to fulfil the rental period as stated on your contract. If you plan to end your rental agreement earlier than the official "end date" on your contract, you will need to take the following into consideration.
- Compensation may be owed to your landlord/property agent as a result of you breaking your lease.
- An alternative is to find someone to take over your rental contract.
- NOTE: You’ll need to discuss this with your current landlord/agent before proceeding.
- You can list your place on rental websites to let people know what your current place is available for rent.
- Eg, You can list it on the QUT Accommodation Website at http://qut.studystays.com.au
- You can also print out flyers and pin them on public noticeboards.
