Small Bites of Accommodation Advice - Disputes

Disputes with your landlord, rental agent, or housemates

What can I do when I have a dispute with my landlord, rental agent, or housemates?

  1. Try to negotiate possible solutions or agreements with the other party.

  2. Whenever possible, have your conversations and agreed actions via email or any form in writing.
    • If an agreement or promise was made via a phone conversation, you should follow up with the other party via email to confirm the details of what you discussed or agreed on.

  3. If no solution can be reached, make an appointment to speak to an Accommodation Officer.
  4. Bring any supporting documents related to the problem to your appointment.
    • Your copy of your rental agreement
    • Email/SMS conversations
    • Bank statements (or proof payments)
    • Any other relevant documents

  5. Call the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) and/or QSTARS to get additional advice (Contact details available from their respective websites). These services are free.
  6. If you need legal help, QSTARS will be able to refer you to a free community support service.
